      I have found immensely helpful a book written by an Anglican scholar, Edward Giles, in which he provides a good deal of raw data from the early church up until Chalcedon, showing how various fathers spoke and acted regarding claims of Roman bishops, etc. The book is called Documents Illustrating Papal Authority AD I highly recommend : Mark Hausam.
